I have had this old original Aerokits Sea Scout model for quite some time and I am not too sure what to do with it.

The temptation is to strip it and restore it, but I quite like it the way it is.

The classic cream and red hull with the stained deck and cabin sides is not a combination that I would have currently come up with, but it has a nice “vintage” look, and I am thinking about keeping it exactly the way it is.

A new prop shaft and running gear with a little bit of a tidy-up rather than a full rebuilt may be the way to go with this small 24” long Classic Model Power Boat.

I have treated it to a new “orange box” shaped boat stand, so it is ready to be transported and used as a member of the fleet that needs to be finished and out on the water.

@zooma I don't think it's so important with small models and I didn't do the Faun Bob. And especially if they aren't scale models which are lacking detail anyway like window frames. Dave Milbourn didn't plank the decks on his two Huntresses, despite the detail he put into the rest of the builds, and I didn't do my Huntsman 28, though that was one of my first builds and I was fearful of planking! I did do my Huntress though.

@ChrisF It would probably be better if the deck was planked before varnishing it, but this model is very "period typical" and so I will be leaving it as it is - at least for now!

@Nick Ward Hi Nick, I certainly agree with the need to go for something with a varnished deck and painted hull and in the case of little 17" Fairey Faun, a varnished transom as well! For me this is what old classic boats are all about.

I use brushless outrunners in all my prop shaft builds and as long as they, batteries and ESCs are correctly sized then there is no need for cooling, I've even taken the fans off the ESC that they come fitted with. Small models will only be driving a 20/25" prop so nothing is being worked hard. Different if you are running a model at continuous high speed.

Hi Nick - nice to hear from you 👍

Another Classic Model Power Boat from the Aerokits range that you may like to consider is the Sea Nymph.

At 18" long it is bigger than your Sea Urchin, but probably a good size to run on your small lake that you have built in your garden at home.It is also quite a nice looking little model.

I have just won an un-started original kit on eBay for a Sea Nymph, but unusually Royal Mail have failed to deliver it and the tracking shows that they are currently attempting to take it to an unknown address!

Hopefully it will sort itself out and arrive here in the end.

    Stay safe,

    Bob.

    Hi Bob,

I don't know why, but the Sea Scout is a future 'Must Build ' for me - I think I've always admired its simple, uncluttered lines. Now I have built a Sea Urchin, I keep looking at the Sea Scout as if it is the 'Bigger Brother' - they do look similar in layout; I think it's a toss up between Sea Scout and Fast Patrol boat as my next Lesro build (in between some much needed progress on Vivacity of course, which has again stalled somewhat...).
It is also of a reasonable size at 24 inches long, slightly bigger than the Sprite but with more bulk in the hull - perhaps too big for my backyard pond, but big enough for local lakes.

I would almost certainly use spruce/ply for the construction, rather than the balsa used in the Sea Urchin, and probably a Lipo/outrunner. I like the idea of a traditionally varnished deck with painted hull, and agree it is a 'classic' look that suits these models, so if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it, I say.😉

The Sea Scout plan I was given back in 1985 came from a kit that had been built by a boy I knew through school swimming competitions. He sailed his in an indoor swimming pool they had at their house, and I believe it was powered with a standard buggy 540 motor and 6 cell nicad pack - it seemed to go pretty well, although I think the motor got quite hot. If I did build one with an air-cooled outrunner, I might try fitting a small fan into the rear cabin bulkhead and have a vent in the roof to draw cool air through the cabin - you can get small plug in fans through online sources that plug straight into your receiver - just a thought.

Looking forward to seeing what you decide.

    Best regards,

    Nick

I think the same - just enough to "touch-up" the rough areas that need some attention, but leaving the nice "patina" of age to shine through.

It is very unusual to find a nice Classic Model Power Boat that is in good enough condition to continue running without needing too much extra work to keep it working well.

    @ColRay

Not just any old boat ColRay, - it is another Classic Model Power Boat to get back on the water .

Hopefully it will inspire some that see it to "join the mission" and find more Classic Model Power Boats to restore !

    Hi Peter,

I very much participate in keeping Classic Model Power Boats alive and running for others to see and enjoy.........and hopefully convert a few more along the way to joining us and adding to those classic models that are already saved.
